Training FAQ

Is there an age restriction for your training programs?
Yes, we have age restrictions for our programs. For Training Essentials I, dogs must be five months of age and older, no dog is too old to become balanced. Any owners with dogs under five months should consider taking our Puppy Essentials course or private lessons. We encourage owners to seek behavioural-based training as soon as possible to ensure their dog receives the proper foundation for appropriate behaviour.

How long is each training program?
Training Essentials 1 (group class): This program runs for five weeks, with two sessions each week, for a total of 10 sessions (10 hours)

Training Essentials 2 (group class): This program runs for five weeks, with two sessions each week, for a total of 10 sessions (10 hours)

Puppy Essentials (group class): This program runs for four weeks, with two sessions each week, for a total of 8 sessions (8 hours)

One-to-One Pack Leadership Series (private lessons): This program runs for three weeks, with one session each week, for a total of 3 sessions (roughly 4.5 hours)

Follow-up sessions are available upon request.

How much do the programs cost?
Puppy Essentials costs $400 plus tax. Training Essentials I, Training Essentials II, and our One-to-One Pack Leadership Series are each $600 plus tax. Fees for follow-up sessions vary depending on each case. Puppy Essentials graduates will receive a $100 discount when they sign-up for Training Essentials I.

Do I have to take three sessions or can I schedule one session for the One-to-One Pack Leadership Series (private lessons)?
Our private lessons consist of three sessions in order to ensure you get enough time to learn the material and apply the techniques. We want to set our clients and their dogs up for long-term success. A single session is simply not enough to master the approach and techniques.

How large is the class size for Training Essentials 1 and Training Essentials 2?
We train a maximum of six dogs at a time. By keeping class sizes small, trainees get more hands-on experience and focused support. Small group sizes also provide each member with the opportunity to network, analyze and learn from one another. Larger group sizes may cause more distractions to owners and their dogs and as a result, decrease their ability to be successful and achieve their intended goals. Please note, we only allow a maximum of two people per dog.

What will I learn from the training programs?
Training Essentials 1 (group class): This course focuses on dog psychology and behaviour and is not an obedience class. Dogs who are obedient can still have behavioural issues. This course focuses on addressing and preventing those issues. Some of the topics covered in class include: how to be your dog’s Pack Leader, understanding dog behavior, creating a calm dog, mastering the walk, discipline, and socialization. In addition, dog owners will receive the proper tools and techniques on how to manage behaviour.

Training Essentials 2 (group class): This program will further increase your knowledge and understanding of dog psychology and behaviour through a variety of activities including agility, swimming, socialization, pack walking etc. (weather permitting). To register for this course, your dog must be a graduate of our Training Essentials 1 program.

One-to-One Pack Leadership Series (private lessons): This program is one-on-one and conducted in-home. Our head trainer goes directly to the dog owner’s house to assess the dog’s behaviour in its natural environment. This course provides owners with the necessary skills, tools, and techniques to address problem issues and set themselves up for long-term success.

What is a problem issue?
A problem issue in its simplest form is something that can be difficult to deal with. Many dogs can experience these issues on a recurring basis. Some examples of problem issues include: pulling the leash while walking, aggression towards other dogs and or people, jumping up on people, and destructive behaviour (chewing or breaking household objects including furniture and clothes), etc. Our behavioural-based training programs address these issues and help owners successfully adjust their dog’s current behaviour to provide them with a calm and well-balanced dog.

How do you deal with an aggressive dog in the Training Essentials 1 and Training Essentials 2 (group class) programs?
We try our best to limit aggressive dogs. Any dog deemed aggressive is muzzled during all class sessions to ensure the safety of dog owners, other dogs, staff members, and trainers. If the dog remains a danger beyond that we remove them entirely from group class and strongly suggest that the owner considers private lessons as an alternative training method to address their dog’s behavioural issues.

When I found The Dog Haus, my dog was out of control, overprotecting my house, pulling on our walks, lunging and barking at others that would walk past us. Liz and her staff were able to help me to gain confidence and control with my dog – even after only 1 week of classes. Now people stop me on my walks to tell me how beautiful my dog walks. We are both happier and more relaxed, and I can’t thank Liz and the Dog Haus staff enough.

I can’t tell you how much I am enjoying this course. That was exactly the kind of thing I have been searching for. Charlee is so good at walking beside me now I cannot believe the difference in her. I am so looking forward to next class. Forever grateful.

Connecting with the Dog Haus has been a lifesaver for Rocco and I. The group training session was a huge turning point for me as a pack leader and we are having so much more success on our walks together. From one dog lover to another, “You have to experience this!”
